Castello della Sala, a 13th-century castle now transformed into a winery, is equally close by.
Alternatively, the small city of Orvieto is a 30-minute drive away and makes the perfect day trip. Perched on a rock cliff with incredible views, the city is famous for its white wine and beautiful cathedral. Foodies should go on market day (Thursday & Saturday) to experience the bustle of the local farmers who come into town to sell their produce and pick up some of the best regional ingredients to use at home.
Perugia, the capital of Umbria, is a 1-hour and 15-minute drive away and Assisi, the birthplace of St Francis and a site of pilgrimage a 1-hour and 30-minute drive away.
