Location
Losinj island, together with Cres island, which is connected by bridge, makes is the largest island archipelago in the Adriatic, and although it remains unspoiled by development, there are plenty of adventures to be had.
If you can tear yourself away from some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean, then the town of Mali Losinj (20 minutes' walk) is a lovely destination. Dating from the 12th Century, and famous for its large harbour, the town is blessed with some beautiful Renaissance buildings, churches and monasteries. The Museum of Apoxyomenos is dedicated to an ancient Greek statue which is almost completely intact. The Aromatic Garden is not only a fragrant retreat but also serves delicious local food.
For self-catering in addition to supermarkets, there is a small daily market in Mali Losinj and an excellent fish market where you can purchase the freshest fish to cook at home.
There are several water sports schools on the island where visitors can learn to sail, windsurf or surf, and the pristine sea means that there is excellent visibility for snorkelling and scuba diving. Away from the water, you can parachute, rock climb and take a cycle tour through unspoiled countryside.
Rijeka Airport is the nearest airport, reached via a ferry (2 hours 30 minutes) or Pula Airport (3 hours 15 minutes), via a ferry.
